Our Song Request – The Power of Personalised Music
A gift after someone dies

Our Song Request – The Power of Personalised Music
I didn’t start Our Song Request as a business idea, I started it as a gift.
After my Grandad passed away, I had a personalised song written for him by a singer-songwriter I reached out to on social media — something I could give to my mum. I wanted her to remember her Dad how I did and show her how much he meant to us.
When we heard the song, it completely blew us away (click the link to hear for yourself - qrco.de/becySj).
It didn’t feel like a “nice tribute”. It felt like him. The little details. The warmth. The emotion. The way it brought him back into the room for a moment.
Remembering the memories of him visiting us just made me so happy.
I remembered thinking I need to do this for others.
Over time, I’ve witnessed our songs being shared all over the world — by tens of thousands of people. It proves something to me every day: these songs aren’t just “content”. They’re comfort. They’re connection. They’re a way of saying, they mattered, in a form that lasts.
Why music can say what we struggle to
Grief isn’t linear, and it doesn’t follow a timetable. Music helps because it gives emotion somewhere to go when conversation is difficult, creates a shared moment for family and friends, brings someone’s personality to the forefront, and becomes something you can return to on anniversaries and quiet days.
What makes a custom song feel truly personal
The most meaningful lines are rarely the grand ones — they’re the small, unmistakable details that only you could know. It might be a nickname only family used, a place they always wanted to go back to, the way they took their tea, a phrase they said without even thinking, or the kind of memory that still makes you smile even on the hard days.
A tribute also doesn’t have to be only sad; some families want something reflective and tender, others want something uplifting - a celebration - and the best songs don’t force a mood, they honour the truth.
Eulogies are great - but songs get replayed
A eulogy can be beautiful. But it’s often heard once, in one room, on one day.
A song is different.
It gets replayed. It gets shared with friends and family. It travels across countries and time zones. It becomes something you can return to, not just to remember someone, but to feel them and that’s why we do this.
A note on real artists (and why it matters)
You’ll see more “instant” song services appearing, often powered by AI.
For us, that’s a line we won’t cross - especially in memorial work. A tribute song is deeply human. That’s why every song we create is written, performed, and recorded by real independent musicians. We support real artists all over the world and are a proud shareholder in the Music Venue Trust which saves music venues from closing across the UK. We pay our artist’s more than any other site - one personalised song being the equivalent of tens of thousands of streams on streaming platforms like Spotify.
If you’re not ready yet
If the idea feels lovely but overwhelming, that’s completely normal.
A gentle first step can be as simple as jotting down bullet-point memories, asking family for one story each, saving voice notes when a memory pops up, or adding to a tribute page over time. We also appreciate that not everyone has a budget for a personalised song, so we commissioned 10 of our artists to record over 100 songs we called ‘Tributes’. These songs are available at zero cost for anybody after answering some simple questions about your loved one.
Remembrance doesn’t have to be completed in a week. It can be built slowly. I doesn’t have to cost a penny.
Final thought
If you’re reading this because you’ve lost someone, I’m genuinely sorry.
Legacy is made from the moments we keep. Music can be one of the most beautiful ways to hold them.
